Annotation
The article considers various interpretations of the concept "competence" which determines the level of the professional functioning of a person, and emphasizes the distinction between normative and humanistic approaches to the definition of the concept under study. The author has accomplished phenomenological research into competence by means of analysis of a collection of Michael Bulgakov's stories "The Young Country Doctor's Notes", which allows defining its phenomenological status.
