Makhova Irina Yurievna – Candidate of Psychology, Associate Professor of the Department of Development Psychology at the Amur State Humanitarian Pedagogical University. Annotation The article considers various interpretations of the concept "competence" which determines the level of the professional functioning of a person, and emphasizes the distinction between normative and humanistic approaches to the definition of the concept under study. The author has accomplished phenomenological research into competence by means of analysis of a collection of Michael Bulgakov's stories "The Young Country Doctor's Notes", which allows defining its phenomenological status.
