Contacts: e-mail: s_houghton@77.com Annotation The paper considers the nature of stereotypes and their potential influence upon intercultural communication as well the possible ways of resolution of the contradictions generated by stereotypes. The author provides the description and results of her research of the stereotyping within the groups of Japanese university students at the University of Kitakyushi (Japan).
