Annotation
The article deals with the interpretation of irony by means of the frame analysis. According to this method, the ironical contradiction is a result of interaction of two frames. The first frame refers to a real fact, the second one to a fictitious fact. The interaction results in the paradox of understanding: one and the same utterance contains both truth and lie. The research is based on the short stories by W.S. Maugham.
